Traditional Picture Frames and Gilding

Traditional Picture frames are more than decorative surrounds; they are objects of craftsmanship in their own right. At Reidy's Framing, we have a particular appreciation for the materials, techniques and character of traditionally made frames, from hand prepared gesso grounds and bole to the application and finishing of genuine gold leaf. 

Traditional gilding is a highly skilled process requiring patience and careful preparation. Water gilding, in particular, involves building and refining successive layers of gesso and coloured bole before applying delicate sheets of gold leaf. The surface can then be carefully burnished to achieve the distinctive depth, warmth and lustre associated with fine traditional frames.

Where appropriate, we use traditional methods alongside considered conservation practices, creating frames that complement the artwork while respecting the materials and techniques of the frame itself. Whether restoring an existing frame, reproducing a traditional finish or creating a new frame, our approach is guided by craftsmanship, proportion, material quality and longevity.
